We’ve been keeping you updated about the Atari’s upcoming gaming console, the Ataribox. Their crowdsourcing plans and other relevant details about this retro gaming console. However, that’s all on the Hardware side.
But what about the software?
Well, the latest news is that just like the hardware (the Ataribox), Atari has announced somewhat similar plans for one of its many owned game franchise, the RollerCoaster Tycoon.
RollerCoaster Tycoon is a Theme Park construction and management simulation video game. Originally developed by Nvizzio Creations and published by Atari.
So what are the plans for this RCT franchise?
Equity Based Crowdfunding Campaign for RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch
Well, using the Crowd Sourcing platform, StartEngine, Atari has announced a unique but limited time equity-based investment opportunity for those who want to be a part of this gaming pioneer.
Unlike the Ataribox Crowdsourcing Campaign, where the backers had no monetary benefit on their investment, for RollerCoaster Tycoon, Atari has announced an equity-based Crowdfunding campaign.
This means that those who invest in the upcoming RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise for Nintendo Switch will benefit from the Revenue Sharing Program.
The campaign has already surpassed its minimum goal of $10,000 with 48 investors already onboard. Currently hovering around $25,000 the ultimate goal is to raise $1.07 million with 88 days still to go.
Atari will use the funds to develop and publish a new version of RCT for Nintendo Switch and to avail this investment opportunity, backers need to invest minimum $250.00 a pop. Again, the expertise for Nvizzio Creations, a Canadian game design firm will be used to complete this project.
About RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch
Just to give a quick glimpse of the performance of this game, The “Touch” version of this game was released in early 2017. Since then, the game has been downloaded 12 million times (combined) both on Google Play and Apple App Store.
Moreover, the new RollerCoaster Tycoon Mobile has been downloaded 18 million times and till date has received 250 million sessions.
Apple declared it as “New Game We Love”.
Perks for the Backers/Investors
So what are the benefits that a normal investor expects to gain from financially backing the Atari’s new project? Well, here’s the list:
- For All Investors: Having your name listed on the Investors Site Online. A page hosted by Atari Game Partners, a wholly owned subsidiary of Atari whose sole objective is to publish games under Atari’s banner.
- Minimum $750: In addition to the above perk, the investor will get a 25% discount (of the street price) when the game is launched. Applies only to 1 unit of the game though.
- Minimum $1,500: In addition to the above two perks, backers with minimum $1,500 investment will get a copy of the regular edition of the book “The Art of Atari”!
What’s the Expected Return on Investment?
While the exact figures are of course, very hard to come by but what the investors can expect in terms of percentage of return is certainly something that we can discuss. While we have already discussed the prospects in terms of “downloads” of the game above, let’s see how much you can expect to earn from this unique investment opportunity.
- One share requires a minimum $250 and against that, you will earn a share from 50% of profits until you get 120% return on your original investment.
- After that, you will earn pro rata share from the 25% of the total profits until 18 months after the worldwide launch of the game or the earlier termination of the game’s license to market and sell the game.
However, just in case you plan to avail this investment opportunity it is highly suggested that you go through the terms before you take a shot. The whole terms can be found in the offering statement.
Fans Lash Out on the Atari’s Crowdfunding Decision
While the Atari’s management seems to be quite excited with their announcement, unfortunately for them, the fans did not receive the news with the same zeal. Many think about the RCT franchise as a sinking ship which started out great but couldn’t uphold its legacy and this announcement by the Atari Game Partners is just a ploy to put a minimum of their own resources at stake.
StartEngine’s announcement page where the news of this unique investment opportunity is announced is marred by the comments of the fans lashing out and taking a hit on Atari. One commentator, with the name of Tyler Favre comments that he’d invest in the announced project if the CEO of Atari and Nvizzio publicly apologize for their failed commitments they made before the launch of the RollerCoaster Tycoon for PC by delivering unfinished and buggy product.
Here’s the comment.
In short, only time will tell how this recent plan rolled out by Atari shapes out. In case you decide to invest in this opportunity, we’d suggest exercising the required caution and skepticism that you’d for any other investment opportunity.
